Brass compass on weathered stone with forested ridges beyond

Skill pillar

Navigation & Signalling

Self-rescue is navigation plus signalling. Walking harder in the wrong direction is not toughness—it is how people die tired and lost.

Scénario

Overcast forest; trail vanished; three hours of light left.

Meilleur premier geste:

STOP: Stop, Think, Observe, Plan. Mark your position, listen for traffic/water, then signal before a blind thrash.

Pourquoi c'est important

In the PSR model, navigation and signalling close the loop: skills keep you alive long enough for experience and mindset to get you home or found.

STOP and terrain association

Search-and-rescue teaching emphasises stopping the panic walk and rebuilding a mental map from ridges, drainages and last known point.

En bref

Énergie à investirÉnergie faibleThinking is cheaper than walking wrong for hours.
FiabilitéFiabilité élevée
Durée10–20 minutes to a plan

Matériaux

  • Last known point memory
  • Watch/sun if visible
  • Markers (blazes you can undo)

Étapes

  1. 1Stop moving. Sit, drink, calm breathing.
  2. 2List facts: last trail, sun direction, time, terrain slope.
  3. 3Identify handrails (streams, ridges) you can follow without cliffing out.
  4. 4Choose: return to last known point, follow handrail to help, or stay and signal.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Continuing downhill blindly
  • Night travel without need
  • Erasing your own breadcrumb trail

Autres méthodes

Sun & star orientation Énergie faible · Fiabilité moyenne

Pre-compass cultures used solar arcs and star paths; still useful when electronics fail.

Matériaux

  • Clear sky
  • Stick shadow method
  • Northern/Southern hemisphere star knowledge

Étapes

  1. Shadow-stick: mark tip shadow; wait 15+ minutes; the line approximates east–west.
  2. At night, find your latitude’s reference stars if you know them.
  3. Confirm with terrain—never trust a single cue.

Énergie à investir

Énergie faible. Observation only—until you start marching.

Adaptation par région

Idéal en: Désert, Montagnes, Côte et marais · Peu adapté en: Forêt tempérée, Jungle tropicale, Neige et glace

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Overcast sky
  • Magnetic anomalies near metal (if using compass later)
  • Confusing hemisphere star rules
Signalling for rescue Énergie moyenne · Fiabilité élevée

Mirrors, smoke, panels and radio beacons evolved because being alive is useless if nobody can find you.

Matériaux

  • Signal mirror or shiny can lid
  • Smoke generators (damp greens on hot fire)
  • Bright cloth panels in open ground
  • Whistle (three blasts)

Étapes

  1. Move to an open ridge or clearing when safe.
  2. Prepare mirror flashes toward aircraft; sweep the horizon.
  3. Build contrast: three fires, three panels, or large ground shapes.
  4. Conserve night signals; listen for search patterns.

Énergie à investir

Énergie moyenne. Site prep and fuel cost energy—do it where visibility is real.

Adaptation par région

Idéal en: Forêt tempérée, Désert, Montagnes, Neige et glace, Côte et marais · Peu adapté en: Jungle tropicale

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Signalling under dense canopy
  • One tiny smoky fire nobody can see
  • Leaving the signal site after contact is likely
Évaluer

Échelle de compétence

Auto-évaluation honnête avec les mêmes niveaux que le calculateur.

  1. Aucune

Cannot orient without a phone; panics when the trail disappears.

  2. Basique

Can use a simple compass and whistle; knows STOP.

  3. Compétent

Map-and-compass competent; can signal and choose stay vs travel wisely.

  4. Expert

Navigates poor visibility; teaches others; integrates signalling with travel plans.

Questions fréquentes

Should I always walk downhill?

Not blindly. Drainages can cliff out or tangle. Prefer known handrails and last known points.

What is the international distress signal?

Three of anything—whistle blasts, fires, or light flashes—repeated.
